When Sharing Cake Was Simple

Do you remember a time when we could bake a cake just because the heart said, "Today feels like cake?" I would stir, hum, wrap a few slices for a neighbor. No questions, no disclaimers. Just, “Oh, thank you!” and a smile that made the sugar worth it.
These days, sharing food has turned into a careful negotiation of labels and sensitivities. "Is it organic? Gluten-free? Eggs? Dairy-free?" By the time everyone’s dietary map is sorted, the joy has cooled.
I miss the simplicity of those old exchanges — when sharing a homemade meal was enough.
Perhaps we can’t go back, but we can be gentle with one another. If someone brings you cake, say thank you, take a slice, and show kindness. No one has to know what you do with it after.
And if sharing food is part of who you are, don’t stop. Bake the cake and send it out anyway. Do it because creating and offering care is how your heart speaks. The world may tell you to hold back, but tending to your heart matters too.
Warmly,
